A trendy and comfortable breakfast dish in the Indian state of Maharashtra, Batata Poha is a simple, savoury, lightly spiced dish consisting mainly of flattened rice (poha) and potato batata. Together, these two simple ingredients form a hearty yet light meal that can get one or anyone started for the day. The flattened rice absorbs the spice flavours with seasonings well due to poha, which is both flavourful and satisfying. Potatoes are often cut into small pieces and saut ed with mustard seeds, turmeric, green chillies, and curry leaves to add a touch of warmth, colour, and depth to the dish. Onions can be saut ed along with spices for a fragrant foundation of the poha. It's then often decorated with fresh coriander leaves, a squeeze of lime, and sometimes crispy sev or roasted peanuts for crunch and freshness. Even the juicing of lime adds to the tartness of the dish and makes up for the richness of the spices. Some batata poha versions add peas, grated carrots, and other colourful and nutritious ingredients. Batata Poha tastes delicious and is highly versatile; it can be consumed as a snack or a light lunch for breakfast. The preparation is rapid and thus often served with a cup of chai (Indian tea), which is an essential feature in many daily meals. Batata Poha is proof of how Indian cuisine can merge minimal ingredients to prepare a flavourful and well-balanced meal.
